Coating Process Fundamentals Program (CPF)


Research in the Coating Process Fundamentals Program (CPFP) is designed to educate students, involve industrial partners and lead to fundamental discoveries important to the coating industry.



2019 IPRIME Annual Meeting

May 28-30, 2019 - Coating Process Fundamentals has a successful workshop on New Developments in Coating Microstructure.  Researchers participate in the poster sessions and program review sessions.  CPFP faculty investigators and industry representatives gather at the Technical Advisory Committee meeting to discuss progress and plans in the program.

CPFP Welcomes Two New Faculty Investigators!

Professors Cari Dutcher and Sungyon Lee join CPFP.  Prof. Dutcher's research concerns rheology, polymer solutions and microfluidics, and Prof. Lee's research concerns fluid mechanics, particle-laden flows and surface tension.  This addition broadens and strengthens the program.

May 21-23, 2019 - Coating Process Fundamentals Short Course educates over 60 industry scientists and engineers in the three-day intensive course.


Short Course on Precision Coating and Drying

January 8, 2019
This course provides coating engineers, scientists and researchers with an understanding of the principles of premetered coating processes and solidification phenomena that are central to developing high performance, precision coatings used in a variety of industries. This one-day course includes content from the Coating Process Fundamentals Short Course held annually on the campus of the University of Minnesota each May. The course draws on decades of research in the Coating Process Fundamentals Program. Comprehensive course notes will be provided.


2018 Coating Process Fundamentals Short Course

May 22nd-24th, 2018 - Coating Process Fundamentals Short Course educates 70 industry scientists and engineers in the three-day intensive course.

Wu successfully defends thesis

Yan Wu successfully defended her PhD thesis, 'Drying and Cracking Behavior of Aqueous Particulate Coatings' on February 27th, 2018. Yan was advised by Professor Lorraine Francis, and is now working at 3M - Shanghai.

CPFP receives donation from the Eastman Foundation

The Eastman Foundation gave a $7,500 gift in support of CPFP in June 2017. The generous donation will be used to support the Coating Process and Visualization Lab.

Liu successfully defends thesis

Chen-Yu Liu successfully defended his PhD thesis, 'Onset of Dynamic Wetting Failure in the Presence of Surfactants' on June 5, 2017. Chen-Yu was advised by Professors Satish Kumar and Marcio Carvalho, and is now working as a Postdoc at the University of Minnesota.

IPRIME Annual Meeting

The IPRIME Annual Meeting was held on the University of Minnesota campus from May 30, 2017 to June 1, 2017. The meeting was attended by over 500 people. CPFP held a workshop on Characterization of Coatings and researchers from the program gave posters and presentations on their latest research results.

Lade successfully defends thesis

Robert Lade successfully defended his PhD thesis, 'Flow and Drying Dynamics in Gravity- and Capillary-Driven Coating Processes' on May 26, 2017. Bob was advised by Professors Lorraine Francis and Chris Macosko and is now working for Intel.

Coating Process Fundamentals Short Course

Over 60 scientists and engineers from industry attended the three-day intensive course on the campus of the University of Minnesota, May 22-24, 2017.
